Ethics to be discussed at CNR-Biology Colloquium
Michael Nelson, assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Idaho, will give the third presentation in the spring College of Natural Resources-Biology Colloquium Series at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Wednesday, March 2.
Nelson will discuss "Ethics: Beware of False Idols" at 3 p.m. in Room 170 of the College of Natural Resources. The event will be open to the public free of charge.
He will focus on the strong and inescapable tie between ethics and conservation. Nelsons message is to educate the audience on the hazards of false approaches to ethical and conservation problem solving as well as imparting general information about conservation ethics.
Nelson is involved in writing and speaking on the topic of environmental ethics. He combines his interest in environmental ethics, ethical theory, conservation biology, wilderness philosophy and American Indian environmental thought into his teaching to create a multifaceted view of the subject. He holds a Ph.D. from Lancaster University in England and served on both the CNR and philosophy faculties at UWSP. In 2002 he received the Excellence in Teaching Award at UWSP.
