Danny Roberts to speak at UW-Stevens Point
Danny Roberts, a cast member from MTVs "Real World: New Orleans," will discuss the pressures of being gay, Thursday, Feb. 26 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The presentation at 8 p.m. in the Laird Room of the University Center (UC) will cost $5 for UWSP students or $8 for the public. Tickets are available at the UWSP Box Office, Room 103A University Center, 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378, online at https://tickets.uwsp.edu/Wt3/, or at the door if the concert is not sold out in advance.
Roberts, hailing from Rockmart, Ga., will discuss how being an openly gay man has affected his personal experiences both on and off television. He speaks about his history growing up in a small town and how he always felt different. Roberts also says before he could accept his own sexuality, he had to break down the stereotypes of gay men that society had taught him. While attending the University of Georgia, he had his first contact with openly gay people who did not fit the stereotypes and helped him to realize that being gay was not something to be ashamed of. Because of his long-term relationship with a military officer, Roberts speaks about the inherent problems with the current "Dont Ask, Dont Tell" policy to which the U.S. Military adheres and how students can have a positive effect on how society views homosexuality.
