CWES offers summer programs
The Central Wisconsin Environmental Station (CWES) on Sunset Lake, one of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Points field stations, will host its 29th summer program season.
Professionals in the fields of youth programming and environmental education will run the programs with the aid of UWSP students. "Leading the Way" will be a new offering this year for 14-17 year-olds. Campers will strengthen their team-building skills, improve their outdoor skills and learn how to coordinate valuable community projects. Each camper will pay a small fee of $30. The remaining cost of $175 per camper will be paid by a Wisconsin Rural Leadership Grant.
Other offerings this summer include:
"Natural Resource Careers Camp," ages 14-17, July 25-30, cost $290. Campers will explore opportunities that exist in the fields of forestry, waters, wildlife, land use planning, soils, and environmental education and interpretation. A credit from UWSP is available for an additional fee.
"Forest Friends," ages 6-9, June 20-22, cost $130. Campers will discover the wonderful world of wildlife, woods, and water around them. This is an ideal experience for a first-time camper.
"Earth Explorers," ages 7-9, June 22-25, cost $190. This camp is designed for those who want to explore nature. It will include pond mucking, prowling for owls, listening for loons, designing art from nature, and more. Campers, ages 7-9, can extend their stay as a Forest Friend to be an Earth Explorer by paying only $285 for both camps.
"Everything Under the Sun," ages 9-11, June 27-July 2, cost $285. This is the traditional summer camp for those who like to do everything. Campers will enjoy all of the things that they love about camp and will be challenged to try some new things too. An optional horseback riding trip is available for an additional fee of $30.
"Outdoor Adventures," ages 12-15, July 6-11, cost $295. This is an experience for campers who want to advance their camping and canoeing skills. Participants will learn appropriate paddling techniques and challenge themselves by scaling a 30-foot rock-climbing wall.
"Outdoor Expedition," ages 13-16, July 6-16, cost $520. CWES will offer an 11-day camp for those wanting to hone their outdoor canoeing, camping and backpacking skills. This camp includes an expedition to the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for four days and three nights. Space is limited.
"Skys the Limit," ages 10-12, July 11-16, cost $285. Campers will plan their own schedules from an exciting list of activities like tree climbing (the forester's way), archery, fishing, pond exploration, swimming, canoeing, and more. Horseback riding is available for an additional fee of $30.
"CWES Survivors: The Ultimate Challenge," ages 12-14, July 18-23, cost $285. Campers will put their teamwork, outdoor skills and willpower to the test. Only creative problem-solving skills, cooperation, and courage will help campers "survive" this exciting set of challenges.
