South American sustainability expert coming to UWSP

Dr. Antonio Bueno Lazo, director of the Center for Construction with Earth and Sustainable Development of Lima, Peru, will speak at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5.

Lazo�s presentation, "Community-Based Sustainable Development Experiences from Cusco, Peru," will be held in the University Center Melvin R. Laird Room and will be open to the public free of charge. The presentation is part of the "Critical Issues" International Seminar Series hosted by the Global Environmental Management (GEM) Education Center, UWSP�s College of Natural Resources, and UW-Extension.

Lazo will discuss his recent work in the highland Andean village Ccachupata near Cusco, Peru, not far from the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. His efforts there have focused on maintaining both the cultural and ecological integrity of the area. Lazo will speak about economic self-sufficiency, appropriate use of technology, aquaculture, composting, new construction, reforestation, organic farming and a variety of other topics as they relate to sustainability.

He is a professor of chemical engineering at the National University of Cusco, Peru, and is involved in partnership activities with the GEM Education Center, including learning experiences for UWSP students.
