Bob
Spoerl, Waupaca, began a two-year term as the 17th president of the
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Alumni Association on February 3.
Spoerl
has been president of Premium Brands of Stevens Point, Inc. since 1988. A 1982 graduate of UWSP, he has been a member of the board since 1993. He succeeds Bruce Bay, Eureka, Mo., in taking on responsibility to oversee activities of the 47,000-member association. |
When
I left Stevens Point in 1982, becoming president of the UWSP Alumni Association
wouldnt have made my top 100 list, he said.
But when I returned to the area six years later, I became involved
with the Alumni Association and realized how meaningful this university is to
its graduates.
During
his two-year term as president, he intends to share that meaning with his fellow
alumni, whom he calls the heart and soul of UWSP.
The
Alumni Association provides opportunities for alumni to re-connect with their
alma mater, including nine association chapters in Wisconsin.
Alumni events also are held in cities across the U.S.
At
these reunions, alumni bring back memories of their education as well as their
personal experiences at UWSP, Spoerl said.
Alumni
chapters have been started in areas of the state that have the most concentrated
populations of UWSP alumni, according to Brant Bergeron, director of UWSP Alumni
Relations. The areas that are the
focus of chapter programs are Dane County, the Fox Cities, Marathon County, the
Milwaukee Area, Northeast Wisconsin, Portage County, Waupaca County, the
Wisconsin Rapids area and the Marshfield area.
At least one event has already been held in each of these areas and more
events are planned for the coming year. Invitations
will be mailed preceding each event and an updated calendar can be seen on the
Internet (www.uwsp.edu/alumni).
We
arent forgetting our alumni in areas where we have fewer members, Bergeron
says. The Alumni Association will
host events in areas like Rhinelander, the Lakeshore and La Crosse, but perhaps
not every year. They also will continue to have events in places like the
Twin Cities, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and California.
