Wausau student awarded full-tuition scholarship at UWSP
Brooke Mesenberg, Wausau, is the recipient of a full-tuition scholarship to continue her studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The scholarship was presented at a luncheon on Saturday, May 18.
Mesenberg was awarded the 15th annual Kathrin "Kitty" Saunders Sebold Scholarship, one of the premier scholarships at UWSP. The daughter of Barb and Brian Mesenberg, 2313 N. 76th Ave., Wausau, she is a 1999 graduate of Newman High School. She is a junior at UWSP majoring in elementary education with a minor in English as a second language.
The Sebold scholarship is intended to reward a UWSP student who demonstrates high potential for becoming a leader in a chosen field or profession. It was established by D. David "Dewey" Sebold of Medford, former president and CEO of Tombstone Pizza, in memory of his wife Kitty, a social worker and former resident of Wisconsin Rapids. Both Kitty and Dewey graduated from UWSP in 1968.
"I am grateful for this scholarship," Mesenberg said. "It is a great honor to receive an award that recognizes not only academic excellence, but more importantly leadership and involvement in the community. Kathrin was an inspiring individual whose life came to an end all too soon, but whose enthusiasm for life and love of children will carry on with me for a lifetime."
In 2001, Mesenberg received the University Leadership Award, the Volunteer Service Community Partners Award and the Presidents Student Service Award. She has received the Deans Distinguished Achievement Award and has been on the academic highest honor role for five semesters. She holds a nearly perfect grade point average of 3.98.
Previously she received the Gavin Hegg and Erling E. Hegg Memorial Future Teacher Scholarship and the Phi Kappa Phi Sophomore Scholarship.
Mesenberg has served in numerous volunteer activities through the Student Wisconsin Education Association (StWEA) such as teaching in the Latchkey Program at Jefferson Elementary School in Stevens Point, participating in Outreach to Teach and serving as a delegate to the statewide StWEA Representative Assembly.
She has been a volunteer coordinator for the Association for Community Tasks tutoring program at St. Peters Middle School and J.F. Kennedy Elementary School. She also volunteered at McKinley Center in the English as a second language room and was a Youth in College volunteer teacher during the summer at Washington Elementary School in Stevens Point. She was a coordinator and tutor for the Homework Center, which provides homework assistance to students who live in public housing.
Mesenberg also volunteers with Special Olympics and is Reading Is Fundamental coordinator. She is a board member of Kappa Delta Pi education honor society, serving as treasurer. She is employed during the academic year as an English tutor in the Tutoring and Learning Center at UWSP. During the summer she works at The Rose Garden restaurant in Wausau.
