Statewide art work displayed at UW-Stevens Point

Artwork from across the state has been selected for the Juried Graphic Design Exhibition at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The show will be held in the Carlsten Art Gallery of the Fine Arts Center from Sunday, Feb. 29, through Friday, March 19.

Area students are among the artists selected for the show. At a reception in the gallery on Sunday, Feb. 29, prize winners will be announced. The reception, from 2 to 4 p.m., is open to the public free of charge.

Cash prizes will be given for Best of Show, $250; second place, $200; third place, $150; fourth place, $100; and $25 each for fifth through seventh place.

The exhibition includes 61 graphic design pieces created by 43 students at UWSP, UW-Stout, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Whitewater, Madison Area Technical College, Milwaukee Area Technical College and Nicolet Area Technical College. Juror John DuFresne, chair of visual communications at the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul, Minn., selected works for the show from 174 pieces entered by 82 students.

"This exhibition is a testament to the fine work being produced in Wisconsin's many capable graphic design programs," DuFrense said. "Included in the selections are innovative and thoughtful solutions to an array of impressive assignments. The students represented here, as well as their professors, are to be commended for the depth of their thinking, their refined sense of craft and their commitment to concept. Graphic design is increasingly being referred to as a process as well as an outcome. It is refreshing to see student work transcend the dressed up realm of stylized eye candy. The best examples here truly communicate a thoughtful sense of purpose and reflect a disciplined effort."

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. and when performances are scheduled in the Fine Arts Center.
