Honors Orchestra Festival at UW-Stevens Point
The 12th Annual Central Wisconsin Honors Orchestra Festival will bring top string players from area high schools to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Thursday, February 13.
A concert that combines honors students and the UWSP Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Professor Patrick Miles will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in Michelsen Hall of the Fine Arts Center. In addition, two guest high school orchestras will perform. This year the orchestras from Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School and Shawano High Schools will be featured.
Admission to the concert is $5 for the general public, $3 for senior citizens, $2 for youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UWSP ID. Tickets are available at the UWSP Box Office in Room 103A of the University Center or by phone at (715) 346-4100 or (800) 838-3378. Tickets also will be available at the door if the concert is not sold out in advance. It is part of the Music Departments Scholarship Series.
During the festival, area students and directors come to UWSP for a day of rehearsals, master classes and the evening concert. Classes are taught by UWSP string faculty members including violinist Steven Bjella, violist Dee Martz, cellist Lawrence Leviton and bassist Catalin Rotaru.
"The concert gives all of the performers a unique side-by-side experience," Miles said. "The high school students are exposed to performing in a university orchestra, and the college students, many of whom are music education majors, have the opportunity to interact with high school students."
Hosted by the UWSP Department of Music, the festival brings students to campus from area high schools that have string programs. Wisconsin has more than 500 high school band and choral programs but fewer than 100 string programs. According to Miles, the festival was originally conceived to foster a sense of cooperation and support among area string programs.
Participating schools include Stevens Point Area Senior High School, Lincoln High School of Wisconsin Rapids, Marshfield High School, Wausau East and Wausau West High Schools, D.C. Everest High School and Shawano High School.
Under the direction of Miles, the UWSP Symphony Orchestra has grown from a string membership of 13 to its current roster of 51 string players. The orchestra has been a featured ensemble at the Wisconsin Music Educators Association convention in Madison.
