Student dance places at regional competition

A dance piece by two students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point was recognized during recent regional competition sponsored by the American College Dance Festival Association (ACDFA).

Student choreographers Eddy and Tracie Oroyan, Green Bay, a husband and wife team, created and performed "reCommunion" set to the music of "Adam and Eve" by October Project. Along with 10 other dances, the piece was chosen for a Gala Concert during the two and a half day competition in Detroit, Mich. From this concert, six pieces were selected to attend the national ACDFA festival in Washington D.C. in May. "reCommunion" was chosen as an alternate for the national festival.

Aaron Foelske, Maribel, also performed "Death, Be Not Proud" at the regional festival. He choreographed the piece using text by 17th century English poet John Donne and music "Flying Home" by Jason Robert Brown.

The three students originally performed the pieces last fall for "AfterImages," an annual production of the UWSP Department of Theatre and Dance.

Susan Hughes Gingrasso, professor of theatre and dance, and Mary Fehrenbach, lecturer in dance, accompanied 24 UWSP dance students to Wayne State University in Detroit for the regional festival.

During the event, three professional adjudicators evaluated 61 dances from 50 college and university dance programs in the five-state region. In 1984, 1994 and 1996, the UWSP dance program has had pieces chosen to participate in national festivals, which are held every two years.
