AIRO Powwow at UWSP

Native American dance, arts and artists will be featured at the annual American Indians Reaching for Opportunities (AIRO) Powwow on Saturday, March 31, at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The powwow will be held beginning with the grand entry at 1 p.m. in the Berg Gym of the Health Enhancement Center. Events will continue throughout the day until 10 p.m. A feast will be served at 5 p.m., followed by a second grand entry at 7 p.m.

Admission including the meal is $4 for the general public and $3 for students with a UWSP ID. Tickets are available at the University Box Office, 200 Division St., or by calling (715) 346-4100 or (800) 838-3378. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted.

This celebration, sponsored by Multicultural Affairs, will include several different dancing styles. The men will wear eagle feather bustles, beads, war paint and often carry a war club. Traditional women dancers dress in ribbon or fringed buckskin while they dance to drum beats. Throughout the day there will be opportunities to participate and observe in a variety of Native American traditional events.

AIRO (American Indians Reaching for Opportunities) hopes to reach out to the Stevens Point community to illustrate their culture and traditions, offering a better understanding between Native Americans and the community.
