LIFE classes scheduled for January

Informative and educational classes for the adult learner will be held in January through the Learning is Forever (LIFE) program hosted by the Office of Continuing Education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network, LIFE is one of 200 similar membership-based adult learning associations around the nation, with dues of $60 per year.

Most classes meet at UWSP during the midday or early evening, with no attendance taken, no homework and no exams. Specific locations will be indicated with enrollment confirmation.

Those interested in attending any of the classes may contact UWSP Continuing Education at (715) 346-3838 or (800) 898-9472. Additional classes will be held throughout the year. The complete listing of classes is available online at www.uwsp.edu/conted/programs/life.

January classes include:

2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets in and Orchestra, So Why 4 Horns? - The history of the horn in the orchestra will be discussed. The session will be led by Patrick Miles at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Handling Conflict & Getting Over Resentments, Grudges, and Bitterness - Learn ways to talk about difficult subjects while increasing the chances of getting what you want. Then learn how to get through or over the bad things that have happened, moving toward peace. The session is led by Jane Jones and John Bailiff at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays, Jan. 25 and Feb. 1.

Joseph Campbell�s "The Power of Myth," Part II - Joseph Campbell, the leading authority on cultural mythology and comparative religion, was interviewed by PBS�s Bill Moyers in the late 1980s. Participants will view the last three hours of the production and discuss Campbell�s words of wisdom and provocative theories. You need not have been present for Part I to participate. The session will be led by Karen Schimian at 1:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Jan. 26, Feb. 2 and Feb. 9.

Ballroom Dance for Beginners- Lenore Haferman and John and Clara Kubisiak will lead a class with all the basic dance steps for waltzes and various types of slow moving music. Held on Thursdays, Jan. 26, Feb. 2 and Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m., the class is limited to 15 couples or 30 mixed singles.

Orchids and Art Bloom in Mid-Winter - Deep in Wisconsin�s winter, the Riverfront Arts Center will bloom with original flower art and live orchids. In this program both the artistic and the natural beauty will be explored as experts give tours through the plants and art. Joan McAuliffe, Mark Brueggeman and Brenda Gingles will lead the group at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 27.

Music and Noise - Join an exploration of the nature of music as seen from the perspective of a drummer. Led by Robert Rosen, the class will be held on Monday, Jan. 30 at 7:15 p.m.
