International programs offers Theatre in London course

Theatre lovers may participate in the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point’s (UWSP) three-week Theatre in London course again this summer.

The course, offered by International Programs, will be held June 6 to June 25. The trip provides an opportunity for university students and others who share in interest in drama to study and enjoy English theatre.

Participants will see at least nine plays, ranging from Shakespeare to first run productions of new plays, classic revivals to musicals in some of London’s most historic theatres, including the National Theatre, the Barbican and the Royal Court, hear British guest lecturers and explore London. There also will be a session at the new Globe Theatre.

This year’s leader is James Stokes, professor of English, who teaches Shakespeare, English history, European drama and Reading the Drama. He is the author of two two-volume books in the "Records of Early English Drama" series. Stokes received his master’s degree from San Francisco State University and a doctorate from Washington State University. He has lead previous UWSP Theatre in London programs.

Participants have two weekends in which they may travel, attend additional productions or explore London. In the past, individuals have traveled to Bath, Cornwall, the Lake District, St. Alban’s with its Roman Theatre, as far as Scotland, and even to Amsterdam and Paris.

The group will stay at International Student House (ISH), a facility located in the heart of London and within walking distance of many venues. The house also contains a travel office with an expert and friendly staff who will help participants arrange trips and outings.

The course may also be taken for undergraduate or graduate credit in English or theatre arts. Those interested in the program should apply as soon as possible. More information about the trip is on the Web at www.uwsp.edu/studyabroad or by contacting International Programs, (715) 346-2717 or intlprog@uwsp.edu. For information about the content of the course or details about traveling and living in England, contact Jim Stokes, jstokes@uwsp.edu or (715) 346-4342.
