UWSP students attend National Model UN Conference

Twenty-three students from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point recently attended the 2000 National Model United Nations Conference in New York City.

Approximately 3,000 delegates from five continents attended the annual conference. Senior U.N. officials, including Secretary General Kofi Annan, spoke to and met with delegates. The conference is one of the largest and most prestigious model United Nations conferences in the world.

In its role at the event, the UWSP delegation represented the country of Japan and the International Federation of Settlement and Neighborhood Centers (IFSNC), a non-governmental organization. The students participated in 16 different U.N. committees. They are all members of UWSP’s United Nations Student Organization (UNSO). Jianwei Wang is the group’s adviser.

At the conference, students were given the chance to explore issues such as peacekeeping operations, disarmament, social development, human rights, narcotics, trade and development, refugees and the environment.
