Professor to exhibit sculptures at UWSP
Using unique sculptures of unfired raw clay, a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point professor of art and design explores the fragility and impermanence of life in a new exhibit at the Carlsten Art Gallery.
"Walking the Corridor," featuring Professor Anne-Bridget Gary’s works of raw clay, wood, latex sisal and other mixed media, is on display today through Sunday, April 27. An opening reception will be held at the gallery on Monday, April 14 from 4 to 6 p.m.
"I hope to present a message of the vulnerability and fragility that all humans share and gain as they hopefully grow and change along their way in life," Gary said.
The name of the exhibit reflects on the months Gary spent in the halls of a hospital and nursing home as her mother was dying of cancer. She created many of the pieces within the last five months, with some of the works completed last year during a residency at the Mary Anderson Center at Mount Saint Francis, Ill.
Gary has taught at UWSP since 1989 and has shown works in Japan, Holland, France, Italy, China and Korea. In 2007 she presented her work at the People’s Republic of China International Editor’s Conference and documented the famous clay Xian warriors. She has served as an artist-in-residence both nationally and internationally. She earned degrees at Southern Illinois University and Massachusetts College of Art.
Located on the second floor of the Noel Fine Arts Center, the Carlsten Gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday evenings from 7-9 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. For more information contact Gallery Director Caren Heft at (715) 346-4797.
