Students honored for leadership in the UWSP workplace

Student employees at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point were honored at the University Leadership Awards held on Saturday, May 5.

Brian Alford, Mosinee, was named Student Employee of the Year. A senior majoring in computer information systems, he has worked as an information processing consultant in the University Library for three years. He was nominated by David Timm and Kate Anderson of the library.

"Whenever there are problems he attends to them immediately, communicates often with us about what he is doing and he is always looking for ways to improve the system," said Timm and Anderson, adding that he is patiently diligent and adaptable and has an ease relating and listening to others.

"These characteristics and his technical expertise make for an exceptional student employee," they said.

Also nominated for Student Employee of the Year were Leah Juno, Brillion, who works as a multimedia support person in information technology, and Alicia Roth, Oshkosh, the lead mentor of the peer mentoring program in the multicultural resource center.

A senior majoring in computer information systems, Juno was nominated by Patricia Ploetz of instructional technology who called Juno "an exemplary employee for the past four years." Ploetz added that Juno was dependable, went above and beyond the job requirements and set a standard that would be hard to follow. Juno is a member of Phi Kappa Phi academic honor society and UWSPs cross country, track and field teams.

Roth, a senior majoring in elementary education, was nominated by Rosario Alemparte, a student outreach specialist in multicultural affairs. Alemparte called Roth responsible, committed and reliable, adding "Alicia has a genuine interest in improving the retention of our multicultural students at UWSP."

Roth has participated in the Hmong and South East Asian American Club, COLLAB, the International Club, English for College and Upward Bound. She coordinates the Homework Center for area K-12 students and organized and hosted the "Serving the Hmong in the New Millennium" symposium. She has been the recipient of many awards and honors.

The student employees were nominated during Student Employment Week in April. Activities that week included prizes and treats for student employees, a summer job fair and the naming of the Student Employers of the Year.

Student employers honored for leadership in the UWSP workplace

Student employers at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point were honored recently as part of Student Employment Week.

Theresa Wessels of the Alumni Office was named on-campus Employer of the Year and Jill Basler of Soma House was named off-campus Employer of the Year.

Wessels, Stevens Point, was nominated by Jessica Gorray, DePere, a senior communications major who works as an assistant in the alumni association office.

"Wessels genuinely cares about all her student employees," Gorray said. "She is interested in their lives and makes all students feel like their work is important." She also takes extra time with students, is flexible, provides varied tasks for them and creates an atmosphere of trust in the office.

"She is extremely hardworking and is an excellent role model for students," Gorray added.

Basler, Stevens Point, the program supervisor at the Soma House adolescent group home, was nominated by Stephanie Wendel, Kimberly, a junior majoring in sociology who works as a caseworker at the home.

"I gain more confidence in her presence," said Wendel, "because she notices the little things that people do and is thankful for them. Overall I think Jill is extremely inspiring and admirable to her employees."

Basler leads by example, showing a commitment for her clients that inspires her employees, Wendel said.
