Threshold exhibited at UWSPs Agnes Jones Gallery
A photographic narrative created by two university art and design professors is now on exhibit at the Agnes Jones Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
"Threshold," a collaboration between UWSP Professor John Smith and UW-Oshkosh Professor Edwin Jager, will be displayed through Friday, Feb. 14. The gallery, located on the first floor of the College of Professional Studies Building, is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Developed in response to a poem written by Jager, "Threshold" is composed of nearly 800 color photographs displayed together with the text of the poem to reflect relationships between characters. Smith and Jager, who attended graduate school together at the University of Iowa, have been working on the piece intensively for two years but originated the idea seven years ago.
Its the first time the piece has been presented, said Smith, as the original concept was to create a book of images. The two are currently working on the development of the book as an extension of this exhibit, and are seeking further funding for that project. They also plan to display the evolving work at UW-Oshkosh and other galleries.
The exhibit was funded in part by faculty development grants from UWSP and UW-Oshkosh.
An assistant professor of art and design, Smith works as a graphic designer and artist. A founding member of ConjureArts, a collaborative arts group with interest in public art and design projects, Smiths work has been recognized and shown on a regional and national level. He received UWSPs Excellence in Teaching Award in 2002. Before coming to UWSP in 1998, he taught at the University of Iowa.
Jager, a specialist in printmaking and book arts, is an assistant professor of art at UW-Oshkosh. He has exhibited work nationally and internationally.
