UWSP planetarium to offer summer programs
The Allen F. Blocher Planetarium at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will offer two different programs this summer on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning Monday, June 9.
Two programs, "Gods of the Solar System" and "Journey to the Stars," will be shown at the planetarium at 8 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday evenings from June 9 through July 30. Both shows are free and open to the public.
"Gods of the Solar System," shown Mondays on June 9, 16, 23 and 30 and Wednesdays on July 9, 16, 23, and 30, looks at the history of the planets, from how they got their names to how they look close up, including views from robotic spacecraft.
"This program is really an opportunity to see what we have learned about each of the planetary bodies in our solar system," said Randy Olson, director of the planetarium. The program was produced entirely by UWSP staff and students.
"Journey to the Stars," shown Wednesdays on June 11, 18, 25 and July 2, and Mondays on July 7, 14, 21 and 28, explains the objects that make our large universe and takes a look at how astronomers study the heavens with different kinds of telescopes. The show surveys the known universe and answers questions such as what are stars like and where are other galaxies located. It also explains shooting stars and the northern lights as well as looks at satellites orbiting the planet and humankind’s future in space.
The planetarium doors open one-half hour before the scheduled programs. Designed for a general audience, planetarium programs appeal to all age groups. Seating is first come, first serve for up to 70 people. Groups of 15 or more may schedule a special showing of any planetarium program by calling Olson at (715) 346-2208. There is a cost of $15 per group for these presentations.
The planetarium is located on the second floor of the UWSP Science Building at the corner of Reserve Street and Fourth Avenue. Parking is available in Lot X near the building entrance, and is free in all university lots after 7 p.m.
The planetarium will be closed from August 1 through September 14. The observatory is closed during the summer months and will resume its public programs in mid- September.
