MarsQuest takes a closer look at the red planet
With Mars visible in the skies until early summer, a weekly show at the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will give viewers an even closer look at our neighbor, the red planet.
"MarsQuest," will be shown at the UWSP planetarium at 2 p.m. on the Sundays of January 20, 27, February 3, 10, 17 and 24 and March 2 and 9. The shows are open to the public free of charge.
Mars conjures impressions that range from the scientific frontier to alien invaders from science fiction. Narrated by Patrick Stewart of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," MarsQuest offers viewers both a historical and futuristic look at this mysterious planet, including images from the Hubble Space Telescope, information from the Viking 1 and 2 landings and a possible future missions to Mars.
Also available each Monday at 8 p.m., free of charge, is the Night Sky program, which looks in detail at objects in the current night sky. If skies are clear, there is an optional observatory visit for sky viewing through the telescope. A forecast of viewing conditions and a statement about whether the observatory is open is available by calling (715) 346-2208.
Planetarium programs are designed for a general audience and appeal to all age groups. Planetarium doors open one-half hour before scheduled programs, which last one hour. Seating is first-come, first-served for up to 70 people. Groups of 15 or more may schedule a special showing of any planetarium program by calling (715) 346-2208. There is a cost of $15 for these presentations.
The planetarium is located on the second floor of the UWSP Science Building at the corner of Reserve Street and Fourth Avenue. Parking is available in Lot X near the building entrance and is free in all university lots after 7 p.m.
