UWSP photographers honored in national photo contest
Two University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point photographers were recently honored in the national slide contest of the University Photographers Association of America (UPAA).Tom Charlesworth, a media specialist in UWSP News Services, placed first in the science category with a photo of a pelican against the blue background of the Gulf of Mexico. Charlesworth also won third place in the news and feature category for a photo of streakers at UWSPs spring 2000 graduation ceremony.
Doug Moore, a News Services photographer and instructor in natural resources at UWSP, won second and third places in the science category. Both the first place shot of a dragonfly and the third place shot of a frog were taken in northern lower Michigan. He also won a third place and honorable mention for two shots in the nature category and an honorable mention for a photo of UWSPs Sundial in the campus environment category.
Charlesworth took his first place pelican photo while sight seeing in Panama City, Fla.
"I snuck up on the bird to get the shot," he said. "And I had to crawl across the breakwater rocks to do it." As far as the shot of the graduation streakers, Charlesworth said "I just happened to be at the right place at the right time."
Moore placed first in UPAAs slide contest last year for a shot of a damselfly and he has placed in the contest many times during his 16 years as a UPAA member. Charlesworth entered the contest for the first time this year at Moores encouragement.
The UPAA is the only national organization devoted to the support and advancement of the photographic professional working within institutions of higher education. There are 300 members throughout the US and Canada.
"Having your peers evaluate your photos is always a great learning experience," Moore said.
A Stevens Point native, Charlesworth came to UWSP in 1999. Previously he was chief photographer at the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune and a staff photographer at the Stevens Point Journal, where he was honored for his work by the Wisconsin News Photographers Association and Wisconsin Newspapers Association. He is a 1987 alumnus of UWSP.
Moore, a native of Grand Rapids, Mich., has worked at UWSP since 1984. Hes won many photography awards including a first place for Old Main in the fall by the Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. He has degrees from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and UWSP and in 1984 was named UWSPs outstanding natural resources graduate student.
Both Moore and Charlesworth are founding members of the Stevens Point Focal Point Camera Club, Charlesworth serving as its vice president.
