All who applied from UWSP were accepted, above last year�s national average of 63 percent acceptance of applicants. Each of the six received the Chancellor�s Excellence in Undergraduate Research and Creativity Award last fall.

Participants are expected from over 300 colleges and universities, representing almost every state in the nation. The undergraduates are involved in scholarly and artistic activities representing a range of disciplines, including creative arts, mathematics, business, social science, humanities, physical and life sciences, natural resources and engineering.

Speakers at this year�s conference include acclaimed historian and author Stephen Ambrose, UW System President Katharine Lyall and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Kweisi Mfume.

Since its inception in 1987, NCUR has become a major annual event drawing over 2,000 undergraduates, faculty, and administrators to hear and discuss undergraduate creative and scholarly work. In addition, NCUR presents an opportunity to hear nationally prominent speakers and to discuss educational policy, programs, and funding for undergraduate research.

Those who will attend the conference include:

• Candace Jablonsky will give a visual presentation in dance titled "My Other Half: The Uncovering of My Potential." A 1998 graduate of Nathan Hale High School, she is a senior majoring in dance.
• Carrie Lande will give a visual presentation in dance titled "Passing My Own Limitation Through �On the Edge.�" She is a senior majoring in dance.
• Jonathan Pauli, co-leader of the UWSP Wildlife Society Flying Squirrel Project, is researching the peculiar population dynamics of two species of flying squirrels in Central Wisconsin. The project hopes to uncover why a parasite that is debilitating to one species causes the other no ill effect. Pauli is a senior at UWSP, majoring in wildlife and biology with a 3.83 grade point average. He is a 1998 graduate of James Madison Memorial High School. He has won several academic awards and is on the dean�s list. He also is a member of the Wildlife Society and Tri Beta Honor Society and he volunteers at the Waisman Center for Mental Retardation in Madison.
• Caroline Van Zeeland, a senior majoring in psychology with an emphasis in human services, is researching the effects of local visual cues on tilt illusion. She is a 1998 graduate of Wrightstown High School. She has won several academic awards and is a member of the psychology and sociology clubs. She volunteers with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, competes in marathons and assists with church services.
• Michael Nowak,  is studying the paleoecology of a 58 million year old fossil plant locality from North Dakota. His research utilizes fossil pollen and spores to taxonomically and numerically represent ancient vegetation. A senior majoring in biology and chemistry, he is a 1996 graduate of Kettle Moraine High School. He has won several awards including research grants and the biology department�s Brian Eagon Research Award.
• Kelly Henderson is a senior majoring in watershed management with a minor in soil science. She is monitoring the Tri-Lakes District backbay groundwater for problems with severe algae blooms and aquatic macrophytes. The study has found impacts to the lake from septic systems in some of the backbays. Henderson has won several UWSP scholarships and was named the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) Undergraduate of the Year. A member and past president of AWRA, she is also a member of the Soil and Water Conservation Society and Falcon�s Gate. She is a 1998 graduate of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School.
