Dickinson poetry performance at UWSP

The poetry of Emily Dickinson will be performed to the music of American composer Aaron Copland at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Tuesday, March 27.

The event will be held at 4 p.m. in Room 221 of the Noel Fine Arts Center to mark Womens History Month. Assistant Professor of Vocal Music Susan Bender will sing the poems with piano accompaniment by Music Professor Michael Keller. Assistant Professor of English Matthew Davis will give an introduction with a brief discussion of Dickinson within the context of American literature.

Open to the public free of charge, the performance will be followed by light refreshments.

Dickinsons poems have grown in fame and popularity since they were posthumously published in the 1890s, and continue to be the subject of ardent scholarly explorations. In 1950, Copland set twelve of her poems to music, echoing Dickinsons poetic style of dashes and pauses with abrupt leaps in the vocal line. Copland, 1900-1990, won a Pulitzer Prize for his composition "Appalachian Spring" and created many well-known orchestrations.

The event is being sponsored by UWSP Multicultural Affairs Office, Womens Studies Program, Office of the Chancellor, University Library, Office of Academic Affairs and the English Club.
