DanceSculPercussion 2008 presents ‘As It Happens’ at UWSP
Sculpture, percussion and dance students from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will present collaborative works on campus on Sunday, April 27.
The performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Michelsen Hall and is free and open to the public.
Students involved in a UWSP interdisciplinary class will present their works that include sculpture installations, percussion and movement. The course, under the instruction of Bob Rosen (professor of percussion), Kristin Thielking (professor of sculpture) and Pamela Luedtke (associate lecturer in dance), was created to offer students an opportunity to explore various mediums of art through a collaborative process. In addition, students have examined sculptural forms and concepts through the exploration of movement and performance. As a major component of this course, the students have developed a performance piece called "As It Happens," interpreting the theme of the I Ching and chance theory.
Approximately thirty students are involved with the interdisciplinary course, meeting five hours a week to explore the connective terminology and expression of the various art forms.
The idea for the course was conceived by Rosen, Thielking and Luedtke in 2002 as a way to create a collaborative opportunity for the students in music, art and dance. Art students collaborated with music students to create musical instruments constructed out of various materials (such as metal, wood and glass) and created wearable art pieces worn and interpreted by the dancers. The musicians and dancers created original compositions of music and dance through structural improvisation to interpret the story of "The Rite of Spring." "DanceSculPercussion" was established through this process.
"The Rite of Spring" debuted in April 2003 on the UWSP campus and was restaged for a performance at the Appleton Arts Center in April 2004 under the title of "Crash," which focused on art constructed out of recycled items.
The art student’s instrumental sculptures were additionally exhibited at UW- Sheboygan’s "Inside/Out" sculpture exhibition during the summer of 2003 and at the Appleton Arts Center exhibit.
