Award-winning filmmaker coming to UWSP

Martha Conboy, an award-winning filmmaker and executive producer for the National Geographic Channel, will be speaking to communication classes and giving a public lecture when she visits the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point (UWSP) on April 21.

Conboy will discuss her successful career, which includes over 25 years of work in production, supervision and management in the film and television industry, in a free public lecture at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 21, in the Dreyfus University Center Theater. The title of her presentation is "Indiana Jane? No, Martha Conboy…a REAL National Geographic Channel Adventurer."

Conboy is currently the executive producer of "Wild Chronicles," a weekly series for PBS in conjunction with the National Geographic Society’s Mission Programming Division, and "GeoSessions," a series of 30 half-hour productions featuring a host of global music stars of Fox’s recently launched channel NatGeo Music. She is also providing editorial supervision on behalf of National Geographic Television International, the distribution arm of National Geographic Television.

Her films have won several Emmys, a DuPont Columbia Journalism Award and an Academy Award Nomination for Best Documentary Short Subject. Conboy has spent the greater part of her career as an independent editor and producer. She’s created drama, documentaries, children’s programming and political spots. She has supervised hundreds of hours of programming as an executive producer for The Learning Channel.

In addition to her creative work, Conboy is a frequent juror at competitive film festivals. She also works with many students at graduate filmmaking programs and often gives lectures on university campuses.

Conboy, who lives with her family in Arlington, Virginia when she is not on the road, will talk to four communication classes and meet with students working in university media organizations during her time on campus.
