Classified staff honored at UWSP

Six members of the classified staff at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point were honored with Classified Recognition Awards at the classified staffs spring awards ceremony on Thursday, April 25. Also honored at the ceremony was the 2002 Carolyn Rolfson Sargis Award winner, Linda Garski, Rosholt, a financial specialist supervisor in International Programs.

Each of the honorees received a certificate of appreciation and a $50 gift certificate.

Jane Burroughs, political science, and Deb Yanda, custodial services, were recognized with the University Service Award for making outstanding contributions of time and effort to the university community outside of their normal work assignment. These contributions increased the positive perception of the university or enhanced the ability of the university to accomplish its mission of providing educational opportunities.

Tom Johnson, facility services, Dave Malay, communicative disorders, Julie Thiele, admissions, and Ella Weetz, Central Wisconsin Environmental Station (CWES), were recognized with the Outstanding Contributions Award for exemplary performance that improves the effectiveness and efficiency of service offered by the unit or the university. This performance may include taking on additional responsibilities, developing new procedures or making the workplace more pleasant.

Burroughs, Stevens Point, a program assistant in political science, came to UWSP in 1966. She was a member of the 2001 Portage County Leadership Institute. She met with community leaders and participated in seminars during the nine-month training that builds a strong network of local residents.

Yanda, Stevens Point, a supervisor for acadaemic custodial services, has a degree in social work and uses her skills on the job. She learned sign language to communicate with the hearing impaired and was instrumental in salvaging classroom chairs to be sent to Nicaragua. She also is active in CSAC activities. She works weekends for the Childrens Service Society, serving as a monitor and supervisor for noncustodial visits. She joined UWSP in 1995.

Johnson, Stevens Point, a housekeeping supervisor, has been on campus since 1986, going "beyond the line of duty" in his daily work, according to his nomination. He sees all projects through to the end and does some of the work himself.

Malay, Plover, is an electronics technician for the Center for Communicative Disorders, helping the staff with daily problems with his creative organizational, time management and thinking skills. He has been at UWSP since 1997.

Thiele, Stevens Point, a program assistant in the Admissions Office, helped create an electronic admissions application with her extensive knowledge of the student information system, codes, tables and numerous application fields. She joined UWSP in 1981.

Weetz, Amherst, has been the office manager for CWES since 1977. She works as a registrar, client contact specialist, bookkeeper, mailing coordinator and operation support person for CWESs school programs, summer camps and other activities.
