UWSP Adventure Tours -the Midwests best kept wellness secret

Switzerland

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is offering its 23rd annual series of bicycling and hiking trips around the world for adults of all ages.

Sponsored by the School of Health Promotion and Human Development, UWSP Adventure Tours are designed to help participants experience wellness at its best. Participants will increase their global awareness and cultural sensitivity while gaining a better understanding of selected countries history, cultures, social structures, cuisine, languages and customs.

As a national leader in health promotion, the school continues to seek new avenues to encourage wellness practice by adults. Utilizing a seven-dimensional model of wellness (social, physical, environmental, career, intellectual, emotional, spiritual), leaders create wellness environments that engage participants in healthy pursuits. Participants are encouraged to take the initiative to lead more healthy/active lifestyles by engaging, planning and implementing a pre-trip conditioning program while preparing for a successful adventure tour.

Typical bicycling and hiking trips range from 12 to 19 days long. In 2008, UWSP is offering trips to the following countries:

AustriaThe 2008 hiking trip to Austria (pictured left), led by John Munson, professor emeritus of health promotion and human development, will visit and explore the ancient town of Bad Gleichenburg (spa town), the city of Graz, hike in the Austrian Alps and end up in the mecca of music, the city of Vienna. Participants share breakfast daily, and then are encouraged to strike out on small group adventures. Munson and local guide Jim Miller will lead daily hikes of varying lengths. At the end of each day they will return to the hotel and dine together or in small groups. The group will stay in wonderful small hotels off the beaten path. Pre-trip orientation meetings prepare participants for the journey, and post-trip picture sharing reunions cement new friendships that last a lifetime.

For those individuals who wish to gain university academic credit, independent study may be arranged in a variety of disciplines. These projects may be designed to meet either undergraduate or graduate course requirements.

"The trips are a great way to earn professional development credits and advance careers while exploring new corners of the world," said Munson, who has led 20 Adventure Tours around the world. "You will find the trips not only affordable and enjoyable but they will also enhance your personal wellness."
