Statement by Chancellor Linda Bunnell
on the passing of Lee Sherman Dreyfus
Former Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
and Governor of Wisconsin
January 3, 2008

Governor Lee Sherman DreyfusWisconsin has lost a visionary leader with the passing of Governor Lee Sherman Dreyfus last night. The impact of his leadership here at UWSP is still felt today.

Governor Dreyfus will be forever known as the Students Chancellor, having pioneered the concept of a student-centered university during his service here from 1967-77. He led with a straight-forward, accessible style that endeared him to the campus and community. He reorganized this institution with the structure that stands today. The combination of his initiatives and the existing programs he fostered built the platform for UWSPs reputation as one of the Midwests finest universities.

It was largely his experiences at UWSP that prepared him to lead the State of Wisconsin as its 40th Governor. The image of Governor Dreyfus taking his oath of office in front of Old Main is indelibly etched in the histories of UWSP and the state.

I treasure the many conversations I shared with Governor Dreyfus and the guidance he gave me, from my first days at Stevens Point right up to our last phone call, before Christmas. His portrait, which he gave me after one of our meetings, hangs in my office. Many of his papers are in our university library, the Albertson Learning Resources Center.

Although Governor Dreyfus illness prevented his attendance at this falls naming ceremony for UWSPs Dreyfus University Center, his family represented him well, and the pictures and videos of our wonderful celebration, with our current students so moved by the event, touched his heart.

We will miss Lee Dreyfus tremendously, but his legacy will be alive at UWSP for generations to come.
