UWSP alumnus Mayor Halverson to join fellow Pointers in
honoring Earth Day
Students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) will plant more than 30 trees and
other plant varieties across campus to commemorate Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22.
For the second straight year Stevens Point Mayor Andrew Halverson will join the students shortly
after noon on the front lawn of Old Main to kick off the event.
Hickory, maple, apple and hops are some of the species that will be planted by more than 100
student volunteers, according to Kevin Hite and Joe Kottwitz, co-presidents for UWSP’s Students
for Sustainable Communities. The trees were paid for through a donation from Wisconsin Public
Service and the UWSP Sustainability Reserve, a fund supported annually by students.
“By reducing the effects of carbon emissions we honor our former governor, Gaylord Nelson, and
the legacy he left behind,” said Hite. “Planting a tree on Earth Day enhances our campus and
community.”
