UWSP Symphony Orchestra to perform concert

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) Symphony Orchestra will perform in a concert that will feature the rich history of 19th century orchestral music.

The concert, part of the Music Department Scholarship Series, will be held on Wednesday, April 29, in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 for the public, $4 for senior citizens, $3 for youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UWSP ID. Tickets are available at the University Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University Center, or by calling (715) 346-4100 or (800) 838-3378. Visa, MasterCard or Discover are accepted. Tickets may also be purchased at the door if seats are available.

Conducted by Patrick Miles, professor of horn and director of orchestral activities at UWSP, the orchestra will feature a solo by horn player Avery Cance, a junior music performance major from Tomahawk. Cance will perform “Concerto for Horn and Orchestra Op. 91” by Reinhold Gliere.

The concert will also include performances of “Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus, Op. 43” by Ludwig van Beethoven and “Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88” by Antonin Dvorak.

The winner of the 2009 Alice Peet Faust Concerto Competition, Cance is principal horn of the UWSP Symphony Orchestra and the UWSP Wind Ensemble and is a member of the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra. She won a scholarship to attend the 2008 Kendall Betts Horn Camp and has played in master classes for William Scharnberg, William Barnewitz, Doug Hill, Kendall Betts, Lin Foulk and Hermann Baumann. She is a 2006 graduate of Tomahawk Senior High School.
