Songwriting class offered through UWSP
Learn how to write songs through a new class offered through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point (UWSP) Continuing Education.
The four-part Songwriting workshop will be held Thursdays from 6 – 8 p.m. on June 4, 11, 18, and
25 in the Noel Fine Arts Center at UWSP. Participants will learn about the creative process of
writing songs, and work to find inspiration using hands-on activities, essays by well-known
songwriters, and songwriting assignments.
The class will also function as a songwriting circle, in which participants will share
songs-in-progress and offer each other constructive feedback. Open to adults and high school
students, participants should be able to either play an instrument or write a capella, and are
encouraged to bring their instruments to class.
The class will be taught by Tracy Feldman, an energetic performer inspired by progressive rock and
new folk, who combines classical training in violin and a unique self-taught guitar style. His
technically interesting guitar work ranges from fast-paced and hard-edged to introspective and
delicate. His artful lyrics explore human emotion and interconnections, and are interwoven with
metaphors based on a life-long love of natural history and ecology.
Tracy’s recordings include “Standing Room Only” (1999), “Sea of Lucky Numbers” (2003), and “Survivin’
in the ‘Burbs” (2006). He has also recorded fiddle with singer-songwriters in the eastern and central
U.S.
Jennifer Layton of Indie Web Magazine said, “Feldman has always had a gift for bringing strong emotion
out of such quietly contemplative songs. He’s a modern version of the ‘60s folk poet with more passion
and fire in his soul.”
