Online theatre course offered at UWSP
An online theatre course will be offered this summer at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point (UWSP) through UWSP Continuing Education.
“THEA 346/546 Stage Management” will be held online from June 15 – July 10. The three-credit
course may be taken for undergraduate credit for $711 or for graduate credit for
$1,131.
Taught by UWSP Theatre Professor Gary Olsen, the class will cover the role of the stage manager
as assistant to the director during rehearsal and in managing backstage activities during
productions, including scheduling, company and union rules, rehearsal procedures, time management,
scene shifts, running productions and touring. Computer applications for production organization
and communication will be used. Students will need Internet access with high-speed connection.
The class is intended for high school drama teachers, students in small theatre programs without
stage management classes and UWSP theatre majors needing electives.
Olsen is chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. He served as the director of theatre
technology for over two decades and was responsible for overseeing the technical aspects including
stage management, lighting and sound for more than 150 productions. He holds a master’s degree from
Illinois State University.
