‘Monoprint 2009’ brings artists to UWSP to share work with community

A group of nationally and internationally-known artists will gather at UWSP May 29-June 4 to create unique fine art prints in support of the Department of Art & Design.

“Monoprint 2009: A Gathering of Artists” will allow 12 artists to create several 18’’ x 24’’ monoprints with the assistance of upper level art students. Each artist will offer two framed prints for purchase at a one-night gala sale and exhibition on Thursday, June 4, in the Carlsten Art Gallery. The 24 prints will be available for $250 each, with all proceeds supporting the department’s programs, scholarships and equipment.

The public may view the artists and students as they work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with lunch breaks) on Friday, May 29, through Thursday, June 4. The works will be primarily created in the Printmaking Room (183) in the Noel Fine Arts Center as well as in other art classrooms.

The event is being organized by Art & Design Professor Bob Erickson, who participated in a similar event at California State University-Chico and invited some of his printmaking colleagues to join him at UWSP. The artists, who range from university professors to independent artists and a children’s book artist/writer, are staying with local families and students during their visit.

These prints normally sell for more than $250, but “these are generous people who are giving their time and talents,” said Erickson, adding that the event benefits the community with art awareness, the artists with camaraderie, the department with fundraising and the students with furthering their education.
