Sentry Insurance Invitation to the Arts to bring Jean-Michel Cousteau to the community

Jean-Michel Cousteau, internationally known environmentalist, marine explorer and film producer, will be in Stevens Point to conduct workshops on marine environmental issues and filmmaking for area grade school, high school and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point students on Monday, October 26, and Wednesday, October 28, and will give a public talk and film presentation on Thursday, October 29.

The Sentry Insurance Invitation to the Arts is sponsoring the events.

The son of the late Jacques Cousteau spent much of his life with his family exploring the world’s oceans. For more than four decades, Cousteau has shared his love and concern for the oceans through education and films. He is the leader of Ocean Futures Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to marine conservation, research, exploration and communicating the issues affecting the world’s oceans.

The public is invited to Cousteau’s presentation, “The Great Ocean Adventure of Jean-Michel Cousteau,” a high definition experience, at Sentry’s @1800 theater on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available at the UWSP Information and Tickets office in the Dreyfus University Center concourse or by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378.

“Mr. Cousteau’s unique combination of environmental leadership, marine research and award-winning films make him a perfect addition to the Sentry Insurance Invitation to the Arts program,” said Jim Weishan, president of the Sentry Insurance Foundation. “We think our local students and community members will really enjoy his insights and film presentation.”

“Cousteau has won Emmy and Peabody Awards for his work as a filmmaker,” according to Jim Haney, interim dean of UWSP’s College of Fine Arts and Communication. “By bringing him to Stevens Point, Sentry Insurance is providing students and the community a wonderful opportunity to learn about filmmaking and global environmental issues from a highly accomplished communicator and marine expert.”

The Sentry Insurance Invitation to the Arts is sponsored by the Sentry Insurance Foundation in conjunction with the College of Fine Arts and Communication at UWSP. Now in its sixth year, the program provides local students – from grade school through college – opportunities to interact with outstanding professionals in the fine arts. The Sentry Insurance Foundation will donate all ticket sale proceeds from the public event to support arts programs at local schools.
