UWSP Adventure Tours: from Minnesota to Mallorca

The University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Adventure Tours (AT) program is offering two different trips this upcoming winter, with participants either bundling up for a whirlwind experience via dogsled in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota or packing sunscreen and bike shorts for a memorable return to the island of Mallorca.

Kicking off the 2010 tour season from February 21-26 is an unforgettable journey through the boundary waters via dogsled. Break out your warmest clothes and join AT Leader Sterling Strathe near Ely, Minn., to learn the basic skills of mushing. You and a partner will drive your own team over three days near the Minnesota/ Canadian border, and during the last full day you will travel by cross country ski or snowshoe to an ancient Native American pictographs site. Enjoy evenings in cozy, warm lodges with gourmet food and top off the experience with a visit to the International Wolf Center in Ely before heading home. Cost of this tour is $1,643 (double occupancy) and includes all lodging and meals. Transportation to and from Ely is not included.

UWSP's Spring Break, March 18-28, finds veteran AT Leader Mark Koepke heading a return trip to Mallorca on the Mediterranean Sea. Mallorca is a cyclist's paradise where you will find yourself meandering through its pastoral interior or rugged coastline. Immerse yourself in the sun and blue skies of this unique Spanish island filled with fragrant orchards, stunning scenery and a dip in the Mediterranean if you're so inclined. This tour will depart from O’Hare International Airport or you can meet the group in Palma. Cost of the tour is $2,225 plus airfare and includes all lodging and breakfasts plus most dinners. You can bring your bike or rent one through a recommended company.

Early registration is advised for both tours, with a $500 deposit to hold your spot. Those who have completed degrees at UWSP will receive a five percent discount on the total tour package (airfare not included).

UWSP Adventure Tours is coordinated by UWSP's Health Promotion and Human Development department. The tours are open to adults of all ages and are uniquely designed to emphasize healthy travel through biking, hiking and adventure trips.

Additional trips for 2010 also include Bike New Mexico, Hike Vienna/ Venice, Bike France, Hike Grand Canyon, Hike UK and Ireland, Kayak Apostle Islands, Backpack Wyoming, Raft Grand Canyon and Bike Natchez Trace.
