Fish farming compliance training workshop in Madison

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility (NADF) is sponsoring the second annual fish farming compliance training workshop on Friday, December 5.

The workshop will be held in Madison at the East Side Club, lower level, 3735 Monona Drive, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop will allow Wisconsin’s fish farmers to hear firsthand from regulatory agency personnel on new or pending rules affecting the state’s growing aquaculture industry.

This past year the aquaculture industry has encountered many state and federal rule changes. Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS), a fish disease of worldwide concern that was first found in Wisconsin in 2007, continues to be the focus of new rules aimed at slowing the spread of the disease and protecting the aquaculture industry. In addition, invasive species and the Great Lakes Compact, now federal law, are issues with pending rules which may affect the aquaculture industry.

The day-long workshop will cover new rules concerning VHS on both a state and federal level; the proposed Chapter NR-40 Invasive Species Identification, Classification and Control Rule; information on the Great Lakes Compact; new Type 3 fish farm registration with medical separation; and record keeping.

The workshop is being sponsored in conjunction with the Wisconsin Aquaculture Association (WAA) and UW-Extension. Agencies invited to the workshop include the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection, United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), United States Fish & Wildlife Service, Wisconsin Department of Commerce, and the Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy.

Who should attend: Current and prospective fish farmers concerned with VHS, bait dealers and harvesters, anyone with an interest in aquaculture, veterinarians with aquaculture practices, agriculture and natural resource field technicians, and the public interested in aquatic disease prevention.

Cost: The workshop is $25 for WAA members and $30 for nonmembers and includes a lunch and break. Preregistration is requested in order to reserve meals.

Lodging: AmericInn, 101 West Broadway, Monona, WI 53716. State rate ($70) is honored, ask for Aquaculture Meeting. Call direct 608-222-8601.
