The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s 2009-10 Performing Arts Series is bringing the talents of nationally and internationally known artists, authors, dancers and musicians to the Central Wisconsin community.
The series will begin on Monday, Oct. 19, with a presentation by National Public Radio humorist and bestselling author David Sedaris at 7:30 p.m. in the Laird Room of the Dreyfus University Center.
Described as “a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today,” Sedaris will present the satirical and humorous commentary that is frequently heard on NPR’s “The American Life.” Sedaris is a well-known playwright and author whose works include “Barrel Fever,” “Naked,” “Holiday on Ice” and “Me Talk Pretty One Day.”
The series continues on Tuesday, Nov. 3, with a presentation by Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, who will appear at Sentry Theater at 7:30 p.m. The best-known poet of the post-Stalin generation, Yevtushenko has remained politically outspoken as an author, film director, actor and photographer.
The Prairie Song Project comes to Stevens Point Tuesday, Nov. 17, with a 7:30 p.m. performance at Michelsen Hall in UWSP’s Noel Fine Arts Center. Comprised of mezzo-soprano Katharine Goeldner, flutist Amy Morris and pianist Michel Heaston, the group celebrates their Midwestern roots, music, friendship and the talents of other Midwestern artists.
The first show of 2010 is on Thursday, Feb. 4, when the Harlem Gospel Choir performs at Sentry Theater at 7:30 p.m. Since it was formed in 1986, the choir has toured around the world to share faith, music and African-American culture while raising money for children’s charities.
On Tuesday, Feb. 23, Tapage and Cuarteto Latinoamericao present Dansq will be staged at Sentry Theater at 7:30 p.m. This dance concert highlights a cultural collaboration as well as the works of South American composers.
Classical and award-winning pianist Sara Davis Buechner will perform at Michelsen Hall in the Noel Fine Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 15. Buechner’s repertoire includes 100 different concertos from Bach to current composers to her own compositions. She also connects with the audience on an intimate and personal level.
Grammy Award nominee Alex de Grassi, often referred to as the world’s best fingerstyle steel-string guitarist, will give a concert on Wednesday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Sentry Theater. Since his first recording in 1978 he has continued to record, collaborate, produce original compositions and tour the world.
Tickets for each show in the Performing Arts Series are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and $6 for youth. UWSP students with ID may buy tickets in advance for $4.50 or be admitted free the day of the show if seats remain.
