Messages from the Chancellor

"The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) community offers its sincere condolences to the families of those who died, were injured, or are still missing as a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Since the day of these attacks, UWSP has undertaken a number initiatives.

Chancellor Tom George spoke during a commemorative service at the Sundial on Friday, Sept. 14.

On the evening of the attacks, students held an informal gathering at the UWSP plaza, known as the Sundial. During this gathering, students spoke of their initial reaction to the attacks, shared information, and called for peace and understanding. Faculty in numerous classes discussed--and continue to discuss--the ramifications of these attacks for our society, generally, and for their disciplines, specifically.  Administrators, faculty, staff, and students worked from the beginning to assure our international students of their safety, as well to make contact with our students abroad.

On Friday, the national day of prayer and remembrance, UWSP held a commemorative program at the Sundial, which was attended by faculty, staff, and students. Faculty, clergy, administrators, and students addressed the university community with personal thoughts as well as analysis of the motivations behind the attacks. During the weekend after the attacks, UWSP cancelled all athletic events, but elected to continue those functions that had clear educational value.

Many joined in prayer at the Sundial service.

During the week of September 17, UWSP is sponsoring a number of functions relative to last week's tragic events. These functions include a student-sponsored panel discussion of faculty experts, a candle-light vigil sponsored by students in our residence halls, a meeting of the Letters and Science Faculty Forum consisting of a faculty forum centering on international terrorism, and a fund-raising concert sponsored by students of the UWSP Department of Music.

The students, faculty and staff are committed to continue such efforts so that our community can aid in understanding the tragic occurrences, as well as providing aid to the rescue efforts and to the families most directly affected by the attacks. This is a national tragedy, which we are committed to help resolve."
