of the UWSP Foundation for six months while a search for a permanent director was underway.

An online training course aimed at preventing sexual harassment has been made available on and off campus (to area small businesses) through an agreement between UWSP and New Media Learning.

A semester in Ireland at the University of Limerick will be offered for the first time in 2005 by International Programs.

Student Daniel Mirman of Wausau, a senior communication major and editor of The Pointer, spent two days in New York City as the guest of the American Democracy Project, a nationwide civic engagement program. Fellowships and paid internships focusing on citizenship are available to UWSP students through the American Democracy Project and Campus Compact.

Anna Haines, assistant professor of natural resources, was named director of the Center for Land Use Education at UWSP.

Scott Tauferner of Tigerton, a senior athletic training and biology major, was one of eight students nationwide to receive a $5,000 Jerry Rhea Sports Medicine Scholarship. Rhea was the head athletic trainer for the Atlanta Falcons for 25 years.

Susanna Weber of Blair, Neb., Kate Hofmann of Petoskey, Mich., Sara Wilcox of Glendale Ariz., and Emily Jacobs of Zumbrota, Minn., master�s degree candidates in the College of Natural Resources, were awarded $1,250 Gaylord Nelson Earth Day Fellowships.

Professor Jim Ramsay, UWSP�s Safety and Health Protection Coordinator, became editor-in-chief of a new online academic journal, Journal of Safety, Health and Environmental Research.

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle proclaimed May 7 UW Spirit Day to showcase 500,000 UW alumni who live and work in Wisconsin. The event coincided with UWSP�s Copper Fountain Festival at Pfiffner Park, an end-of-the-year celebra-tion featuring live music, games and prizes.

John Birrenkott, a UWSP alumnus and Stevens Point native who has been a student affairs administrator for nearly 30 years, assumed the role of interim director of Alumni/University Relations succeeding Jennifer Blum, who resigned to return to her former position as assistant director of University Relations.

Christine Thomas, founder of becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) and member of the DNR Board, was named interim dean of the College of Natural Resources, suc-ceeding Victor Phillips who resigned to head UWSP�s Global Environmental Management (GEM) program. Succeeding her in the interim as associate dean will be Professor of Forestry Robert Rogers.

Zachary Eckberg, a senior urban forestry major from Green Bay, won the tree climbing title at the national Student Society of Arboriculture conference in Minnesota.

Kristy Schmidt of Merrill was named Student of the Year by the Paper Industry Management Association (PIMA). This is the second consecutive year a UWSP paper science student has won the honor.

Professor Leslie Wilson of education was named a Wisconsin Teaching Scholar and Associate Professor Rhonda Sprague of communication was named a Wisconsin Teaching Fellow.

Sherin Bowen of Stevens Point and Gordon Faust of Waunakee were named 2004 Distinguished Alumni, Bob Spoerl of Waupaca received the Distinguished Service Award and Supreme Court Justice William Bablitch and Professor Emerita Mary Croft received the William C. Hansen Distinguished Service Award. Bowen, retired executive director of Wisconsin/ Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, also received a Presidential Volunteer Service Award from the U.S. President�s Council on Service and Civic Participation.

Lance R. Grahn, a specialist in Latin American History who chaired his department at Marquette University, was named the new dean of Letters and Science. He succeeds Justus Paul, UWSP�s official historian and dean of its largest college for the past 18 years, who has retired after 38 years on campus.

Professor of Music Charles Rochester Young won his 10th consecutive award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for his catalog of original compositions and performances of those works.

President Bush appointed Professor of Fisheries Michael J. Hansen, an expert in the population dynamics of lake trout in the Great Lakes and walleye in inland lakes, to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.

A paper written by Andrew Bloeser of Sturgeon Bay, a senior communication and political science major at UWSP, has been named the best in the nation by Pi Sigma Alpha, a political science honor society.

The Helen R. Godfrey Child Learning and Care Center received two grants from the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board (WEEB) to provide environmental education training for early childhood educators and establish a backyard classroom.

Professor of Communication James Haney was granted $14,000 from Wisconsin�s Department of Justice to develop a curriculum to provide media relations training for state law enforcement agency managers.

Professor of Wildlife Eric Anderson was selected as one of two outstanding teachers in the UW System to receive the 13th annual Regents Teaching Excellence Award.

The Wisconsin River Power Company of Necedah donated 80 acres of Juneau County land to the UWSP Foundation. Proceeds from the sale of the land to the DNR will benefit the UWSP Global Environmental Management Education Center�s Sustainable Energy Program.

Charles �Corky� McReynolds, director of Treehaven Environmental Learning Center near Tomahawk, received the Association of Nature Center Administrator�s Leadership Award for 2004.

UWSP was ranked number seven among the top public master�s degree-granting universities in the Midwest, according to U.S. News and World Report.

The National Environmental Education Training Partnership (EETAP) at UWSP received an additional $2.5 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The funding brings the total to $12.2 million for EETAP, a program to increase the nation's environmental literacy, over the past five years.

Professor of Wildlife Eric Anderson and his students are working to find conclusive evidence of mountain lions in Wisconsin. The animals roamed the state until nearly 100 years ago when hunting and trapping eliminated them from most of the eastern United States.

$20,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded Creative Land Use Series for Teachers and Educator Resources (CLUSTER), a project to help teachers integrate land use and environmental education into Wisconsin�s K-12 social studies curriculum.

Assistant Professor of Theatre and Dance Alan Shorter�s piece, �Changing Hearts,� was premiered at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The 25-minute work featured five soloists, a 200-voice men�s chorus and an eight-piece orchestra.

Bill McKee, a 1973 alumnus and head of the UWSP Art Shop, exhibited his maritime totems and wall hangings at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle, Wash.

�Governing the Small City in Times of Fiscal Stress,� was the theme of the 15th Conference on the Small City and Regional Community at UWSP.

Father Angelo D�Agostino, the founder of an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya, for AIDS orphaned and abandoned children, Professor Richard Fuggle, one of Africa�s foremost authorities on the environment, and Professor Robert Bye, a leading world conservationist and researcher of pharmaceutical plants, were the three speakers in the Critical Issues International Seminar hosted by the Global Environmental Management (GEM) Education Center.

Valentina Peguero, UWSP Professor of Latin American and Caribbean History, authored a new book, The Militarization of Culture in the Dominican Republic, from the Captains General to General Trujillo, published by the University of Nebraska Press. She also has an article included in Caribbean Societies and Globalization, published by the University of North Carolina Press.

The DNR hosted a public comment session at the College of Natural Resources on behalf of the Council of Great Lakes Governors on proposed agreements establishing how states will collectively manage and protect the Great Lakes.

Pat Wherley of International Falls, Minn., and William Gardner of West Allis, UWSP senior forestry students, placed second and fourth at the National Game of Logging collegiate competition in Antigo.

Chancellor Linda Bunnell is a member of the College Board�s National Commission on Writing for America�s Families, Schools and Colleges, a group commissioned to define the role of writing in education and to make recommendations about improving writing quality in the U.S.

Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication Gerard McKenna was honored with the Robert E. Gard Wisconsin Idea Foundation Award for Excellence. McKenna retires in August just as final work is being done on the $26 million Noel Fine Arts Center.

Kevin Russell, assistant professor of wildlife ecology, studied torrent salamanders and other amphibians in headwater streams of the Columbia River in the Northwestern U.S. He described his research in the August 2004 issue of The Journal of Wildlife Management.

Nick Scribner of Clayton, a CNR graduate student, was awarded a $5,000 National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) Centennial Scholarship. Scribner studies shoreline development and its impacts on fish habitats.

Newly appointed UW System President Kevin Reilly visited UWSP for the first time to meet with students, campus and community representatives.

The UW System Board of Regents approved the naming of the University Center for Lee Sherman Dreyfus, former UWSP Chancellor and Wisconsin Governor.

Education and healthcare architects SDS of Eau Claire and Perkins and Will of Chicago were selected to design the $17 million University Center addition and renovation. UWSP has a historical connection with Perkins and Will as the original campus building, Old Main, was designed by its architects 110 years ago.

�Sustaining Wisconsin�s Forests: Exploring and Understanding Our Role,� was the theme of the 2004 Governor�s High School Conference on the environment held
at UWSP.

More than 2,800 UWSP students were registered to vote through the efforts of the Student Government Association�s New Voters Project and the Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group.

Telling the story of UWSP�s efforts to improve higher education in Vietnam earned Tom Reich, a 2003 master�s graduate, a prestigious Distinguished
Thesis Award from the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools. Reich, a government documents manager at UWSP, also received the Win Rothman Award from the Portage County Historical Society for his thesis project.

George J. Kofron of Hazelhurst has donated $25,000 to maintain and preserve the James Frechette Menominee Clans collection at UWSP�s Museum of Natural History.

UWSP was ranked 16th in the nation among master�s institutions by the Institute for International Education for the number
of students studying abroad. A total of 357 students studied abroad in 2002 and a rec-ord number of 446 went overseas in 2003.

UW System Regent Mark J. Bradley, an attorney with the law firm of Ruder Ware of Wausau and Madison, addressed 550 graduates and their families at the midyear commencement.

The UPass bus service to UWSP students reached 4,321 riders for the month of November, the largest number of riders for a single month to date.

The Student Government Association developed a new venue for off-campus housing needs with the implementation of a new Web site for students.

Profess or of Art and Design Robert Erickson was awarded a $3,375 UPDC grant to attend the Ballinglen Art Foundation�s Artist in Rural Ireland Program in Ballycastle, Ireland.

Assistant Professor Yan Liao of the University Library was awarded a $1,800 UPDC grant to gather information about natural history collections throughout Wisconsin.

Retired Professor of Forestry Robert Brush was inducted into the Council of Fellows
of the American Society of Landscape Architects during the organization�s annual meeting in Salt Lake City.

 

ATHLETICS

An amazing postseason run was capped by an even more incredible ending as Jason Kalsow hit a fallaway jumper before the buzzer to give the UWSP men�s basketball team an 84-82 victory for its first-ever NCAA Division III Championship in Salem, Va.

 UWSP men�s basketball coach Jack Bennett was named the NCAA Division III Coach of the Year after leading the Pointers to their first national championship and a school record for victories in a season.

UWSP assistant wrestling coach Dennis Hall was chosen to represent the United States at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, after winning a dramatic match in the Greco-Roman title event match at 55 kg (121 pounds) at the U.S. Team Trials in Indianapolis.

 UWSP placed fifth among 430 schools in the Director�s Cup standings, measuring the top athletic departments in the NCAA Division III. It is the highest finish ever for the Pointers, who have been among the top seven finishers five of the past six years. It also marks the third time in four years that UWSP has been the highest-placing non-East Coast school.

UWSP finished second in the WIAC all-sports award for the third straight year, while winning the men�s all-sports award for the sixth time in eight years. UWSP placed fourth in the women�s all-sports competition.

Six UWSP squads finished in the top four nationally with the men�s basketball team capturing the NCAA Division III championship. The men�s cross country and women�s ice hockey teams were national runners-up, while women�s cross country and women�s indoor track and field placed third and women�s basketball placed fourth.

UWSP became the first Division III school to send three teams to final four competition on the same weekend as men�s basketball, women�s basketball and women�s ice hockey all competed. It marked only the second time a school has sent both basketball teams to the final four in the same year.

 Four athletes were named Academic All-Americans, including soccer player Jenny Bruce, who became the first WIAC athlete ever to be named the Academic All-American of the Year in his or her respective sport. Football player Craig Johnson and track and field and cross country athlete Curt Johnson were first-team selections and soccer player Kelly Fink was a third-team honoree. UWSP has 25 Academic All-Americans in school history, including 22 over the past five years.

16 of 20 sports finished third or higher in the conference standings with three first places, seven second places and six third place finishes.

Three sports won WIAC championships (women�s cross country, women�s basket-ball and men�s swimming and diving).

 Thirteen of 20 sports qualified teams or athletes for NCAA Division III tournament competition with eight sports placing in
the top 10.

Former basketball, soccer, and track and field student-athlete Tara Schmitt was honored as the Division III women�s recipient of the Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete award. The trophy is given to one male and one female student-athlete in each of the three NCAA divisions. The award is presented to a graduating senior based on athletic success, academic success and community service.

 Football coach John Miech was selected for the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, becoming the first UW-Stevens Point coach to be awarded the honor. Also, basketball coaches Jack Bennett and Shirley Egner were each selected as the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association men�s and women�s collegiate coaches of the year for the 2004 season.
