1. What is University Relations and Communications?

University Relations and Communications informs the public and the university community about what is happening at UWSP.
Activities of students, faculty, staff, and administrators are of interest on campus, in the community and beyond.
University Relations and Communications' primary purpose is to disseminate this information through various means. On campus we publish the Sundial, coordinate Message of the Day, and share our news releases with the student media. Off campus we send news stories to television, radio and newspapers throughout the state and beyond. We also produce a variety of publications and photographs. Our photo database includes more than 130,000 images of UWSP facilities, programs and people.

2. How does the University Relations and Communications staff get its information?

We get our materials from a variety of sources. Many people submit news directly to us in the form of written information, e-mail or telephone messages. We rely on minutes of meetings, award letters, workshop and meetings schedules, arts calendars and a myriad of other sources which alert us to happenings on campus. We also depend on word of mouth and our knowledge of the institution to help us ferret out news. In addition, we continually seek input from individuals and groups on campus.

3. How does one get in touch with the University Relations and Communications staff?

Contact us at any of the telephone numbers or at any of the e-mail addresses in this web site (see the Staff page). We welcome all reports about faculty, staff and student activities. We then tell our stories to the most appropriate medium both on and off campus. Occasionally, information will not interest the news media, but may be right for the Sundial, our on-campus faculty/staff newsletter, or the Pointer "Alumnus."

4. How does information get in the Sundial and on Message of the Day?

Send e-mails to news@uwsp.edu for the Sundial.  Messages of the Day for faculty/staff or students may be submitted and read at http://www.uwsp.edu/mod/.  Submitting a MOD request requires a UWSP logon and password.  Submissions are reviewed before being accepted.  Faculty/staff messages are administered by University Relations and Communications and student messages are administered by Campus Activities.

People cannot buy, sell or rent things through the Sundial or MOD; otherwise, our newsletter submission policy is flexible.

7. Is governmental relations a part of the University Relations and Communications mix?

Exercising your First Amendment rights is encouraged at UWSP. The campus' legislative liaison is available through University Relations and Communications to help faculty, staff and students in their support of UWSP and higher education. When appropriate, speaking in one voice can significantly improve and maximize our efforts to affect higher education issues. Whether it is salaries, retirement benefits, technology, student financial aid or other concerns, the campus liaison can help secure positive change on behalf of higher education. Our hope is to encourage more people to become informed and engaged in the political process and exercise their rights and responsibilities as U.S. citizens. For more information, see our Legislative Contacts page.

9. How do we get printing done off-campus?

Publications that must be printed off campus are handled by the publications coordinator. Projects can include everything from business cards, envelopes, carbonless and continuous forms, to brochures, newsletters, date books, pocket folders, posters and other publications of all sorts. The range of complexity goes from black ink on white paper to full color, specialty papers and inks, die cuts, embossments, etc.

Since every publication has its own set of parameters, authors should contact the publications coordinator as they begin planning their projects. She can help schedule production, make appropriate choices to stay within a budget and find the best printer. University Relations and Communications staff is also available to help with the editing and proofing tasks and can provide or help locate graphic art assistance.

Off-campus printing must be done by vendors who have been awarded state printing contracts or by local vendors who submit bids. Recycled paper is always specified.  Purchase orders are always required.

10. How does one become part of the Expert/Speaker's Bureau listing?

Periodically we send e-mails to faculty and staff requesting names and areas of expertise.  This information is used for the experts list on the UWSP Web site and for referrals to news media and other groups or individuals.  Having an archive that lists the educational interests and specialties of all our faculty and staff is invaluable.
