In the summer of 2006, the Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP) developed a rubric identifying how and to what extent its two online environmental education (EE) courses (Fundamentals of EE and Applied EE Program Evaluation) contribute to professional development related to the competencies that must be demonstrated by candidates of certification programs recognized by the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE).

The project plan involved completing an initial comparison of the content of the online courses to the competencies required for certification. Once this was accomplished, we asked for assistance from experts in the fields of EE, evaluation and certification in validating the results. Presently, the courses are in a final revision process. We are using recommendations from the rubric review to make minor changes that will result in the competencies being better addressed and demonstrated through the courses. In addition, we identified competencies that were not addressed at all in the courses. These identified gaps may be instrumental in helping to inform the development of one or more new online courses.

Once the courses have been revised, we will work cooperatively with the NAAEEs Certification Advisory Council (CAC) and state EE certification representatives to promote the courses within the National EE Certification Initiative. To find out more information about the National EE Certification Initiative click on the following links: http://www.naaee.org/programs-and-initiatives/national-certification-initiative/ee-certification-program or

Within the next few months we will have a rubric available to you on this website that identifies the NAAEE core competencies that are addressed in the courses. The rubric will also provide you with specific information regarding where in each course the competencies are addressed and how course participants can demonstrate the competencies. These courses will help those of you seeking certification as an environmental educator improve the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate your EE proficiency  in order to become certified in your state/province/region. Additionally, if you successfully complete the course, you will come away with a set of assignments that can be presented to a state certification review board.

Please contact Dr. Rick Wilke at 715-346-4766 or
rwilke@uwsp.edu if you have additional questions about how our EE courses can help provide the professional development necessary for those of you seeking certification.
