Assignment 1: Readings in Environmental Education (10 points each)

INSTRUCTIONS: Please read each of the following articles and answer the related questions. Doing so will enhance your understanding of course material and success in completing your other assignments. Your responses should be word-processed, one or one-and-a-half line spacing, one page in length for each reading. Grading will be based on the clarity of your explanation, the support you use for your response, and evidence of having thoroughly read and understanding the article. Responses to the assignment should be placed in the appropriate D2L drop-box.

• Reading #1.  The Tbilisi Declaration.  The guiding document for environmental education worldwide since its creation in 1977

  Question:  If a group of teachers brought the Tbilisi Declaration to your school board for adoption, which one of the subgoals, objectives or guiding principles would cause the most controversy and why?

   

• Reading #2. The Myths of EE - Revisited. An article that clarifies what EE really is, and what it really is not

  Question:  Question: Which of the myths of EE seems to be most prevalent among teachers you know, and why? You may include your own prior mis/conception of EE if relevant.

   

• Reading #3. EE in the K-12 Curriculum: Finding a Niche. Describes how EE might be fit into the existing formal education system

  Question:  Question: Describe an example of how you infuse environmental education into the curriculum for a subject you teach. Relate your approach to ideas discussed in the article.
