Almost everyone has an opinion about opera, and
the opinions tend to be strong. Lovers of opera speak with almost spiritual
reverence about their favorite works. On the other hand, opera's detractors
often cite this genre as the ultimate example of the incomprehensibility of
"classical" music. Moreover, people have had these kinds of strong
feelings about opera almost since it was invented. This class aims to provide
participants with a comprehensive view of opera as an art form that is much
greater than the sum of its many parts.
