ethos of melody determined by three factors: rhythm, mode, genus
genus was the configuration of notes in a tetrachord; outer notes are
a perfect 4th apart; inner notes are moveable
tetrachords can be combined to create 2-octave segment called Greater
Perfect System: goves you all notes neaded to create melody in a given
key or tonos. There is also a Lesser Perfect System for modulation
to a different tonos
mode: segment of notes within the Greater Perfect System; a characteristic
pattern of tones and semi-tones; also modes have characteristic melodic
patterns, rhythms and poetic forms associated with them. Names of modes
correspond to Medieval Church Modes, but the content of intervals is not
the same
