• begins with short introduction called Buka: this announces piece to ensemble
• Basic time unit is gongan: series of underlying structural gong strokes; deepest gong marks end of phrase.
• Melodic outline is Balungan; this is composed in advance; other elaborating parts are improvised based on balungan
