Music of Indonesia
- Introduction: Geographic details
- very diverse ethnic groups, languages
- Music most often studied is that of Java and Bali
- Musical ensemble is the Gamelan
- contains many metallophones, but also may have drums, aerophones, chordophones
and voices
- Gamelan Tuning Systems
- Pelog: seven-note scale, but doesn't sound like a western scale
- Slendro: five-note scale, approximately equidistant notes
- second octave in either system might not be octave duplication
- because of specialized tuning systems, instruments are usually either
one system or the other
- Instruments: four basic groups:
- knobbed-gongs
- metal-keyed
- drums
- other melodic instruments
- Loud- and Soft-Playing Ensembles
- loud-playing traditionally for outdoor use; instruments capable of
carrying outdoors
- soft-playing usually used indoors; singing used
