Indian Classical Music, continued
- Formal structure of Indian classical pieces
- opening is Alapana: improvised, with very free rhythm, introduces
raga and melodic materials, but not rhythmically organized yet
- Tanam has faster-moving notes, but still not a regular rhythm;
also improvised
- Kriti is a composed section where tala (time cycle) becomes
apparent
- this example uses Adi tala, cycle of 8 beats grouped 4 + 2 + 2
- Kriti can be augmented with improvisation; following kriti, there will
be more improvisation
- North Indian (Hindusthani) Classical music
- influenced by Middle East; music is not considered of divine origin
as in South
- differences in instruments, ornamentation
