are sounding simultaneously (soemtimes found in non-western music;
rarely found in western music)
polyphony: two or more independent lines sounding together
homophony: really a subset of polyphony (a grey area)
melody with a sustained accompaniment
chordal (all voices moving in the same rhythm together)
