- Discussion of Titon Chapter 1: the music culture model is a model for
studying ethnomusicology, understanding musical performances
- center is Affect: "Music's power to move, its emotional
impact"
- music is a performance art, there are customs surrounding different
kinds of performance
- the community defines the rules for the music culture
- rules are perpetuated or changed over time by the community
- Discussion: questions we can ask about music:
- what is music and what isn't?
- what is beautiful?
- on what occasions should music be performed?
- questions we are used to:
- what key is it in?
- what is the harmonic analysis?
- texture?
- Discussion: What is Music?
- preconceived ideas
- good generic definition:
- made of tones
- has emotional impact (affect)
- is an art (something people do) as well as a science (something people
think about in a systematic, disciplined way)
