This event is open to ALL middle school, junior high, and high school saxophonists and their music teachers. We certainly invite all UWSP Saxophone Alums, as well as any student who is interested in UWSP and the saxophone studio.
 
In addition to all the featured activities, the idea behind this day is to offer UWSP Saxophone Alums a chance to come back “home”! Saxo Alums from UWSP are invited to bring their own students and reconnect with fellow alums and to meet current and future students. We also want to extend a welcoming hand to students who are considering UWSP and saxophone study. This experience is a great way to find out about the strength of our program, what it has to offer for your future, and how UWSP Saxophone Studio lives on as a great tradition in the world of musical training for the 21st century!

Frederick Hemke  - Professor of Saxophone - Northwestern UnivFred Hemkeersity

Frederick Hemke is an internationally recognized adjudicator and master teacher, as

well as active recitalist and guest performer with orchestras and wind ensembles worldwide. He has recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Kronos Quartet, Stockholm Philharmonic, Eastman Wind Ensemble, and Contemporary Chamber Players, and can be heard on numerous solo albums. Hemke is also editor of music for solo saxophone and ensemble, author of many articles and educational materials, and a consultant to the Selmer and La Voz Corporations, and the Southern Music Company. Among his many honors are listings in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Music, International Who’s Who of Music and Musicians, New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Encyclopédie de la Musique Francois Michel, editor), the Distinguished Service to Music Award from Kappa Kappa Psi, and the Premier Prix du Saxophone from Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, Paris, where he tudied with Marcel Mule. His students hold major teaching and performing positions throughout the world.

Ancia Saxophone Quartet

Ancia Saxophone Quartet

The Ancia Saxophone Quartet was founded in 1990 as an ensemble dedicated to the creation and performance of new works for saxophone quartet as well as the performance of traditional saxophone quartet repertoire.
 

Based in Minneapolis-Staint Paul, the quartet has performed concerts and presented educational workshops in the United States, Canada, Korea, and Europe. The Ancia Saxophone Quartet has appeared frequently on Minnesota Public Radio. 

  • Matthew Sintchak – soprano saxophone

  • David Milne – tenor saxophone
  • Angela Wyatt – baritone saxophone

David Hastings - Professor of Saxophone & Music Theory - Department of Music - UW-Stevens Point 

Saxophone StudentsDavid Hastings training includes degrees in applied saxophone from Northwestern University with principal studies with Frederick Hemke. Additional study has been with Donald Sinta, Bunky Green, and James Hill.
 
Mr. Hastings ongoing development as a teacher has included participation as Wisconsin Scholar, numerous grants in support of his growth as a teacher, and recognition as a teacher including the first recipient of the Student Government Award for Outstanding Teaching.
 
Throughout his performance career, Mr. Hastings has presented concerts in numerous venues ranging from World Saxophone Congresses to High School and College guest- appearances. His work as a jazz musician has included performances with The Mathew Buchman Quartet and the Wisconsin Jazz Orchestra.

About the Department of Music:

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Department of Music has a distinguished history of educating musicians and teachers since the 1940’s. The department currently enrolls over 230 majors and employs a distinguished faculty of 24 full and part-time instructors with extensive credentials from many of the nation’s most highly regarded schools of music. The student and faculty performing groups, which are widely recognized for their artistic excellence, serve as laboratories for the development of professional skills and a full schedule of recitals, concerts, clinics, and other special events is offered each year to serve students, the community, and the surrounding region.
