The application of these underlying principles to the creation of new music, informed by life experiences and aesthetic values, is crucial to students' development as artists. Composition and improvisation lie at the heart of UWSP's jazz curriculum. Each semester two large jazz ensembles and up to five chamber jazz ensembles provide students opportunities to compose, arrange, and perform.

Beyond curricular activities, students participate in annual Jazz Repertory Concerts, Jazz Composer's Concerts,  UWSP Jazz Festival, The Riverfront Jazz Festival, biweekly jam sessions at the Dreyfus University Center and student jazz recitals.

Jazz Studies

jazzJazz studies majors at UWSP strive toward their passionate understanding of music through the dual pursuits of Research and Development.

Research includes transcription and performance of great music by artists such as Louis Armstrong, Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis. By imitating and assimilating the language of these masters, connections and underlying principles emerge and inform our music-making.
