Planning a field trip to the UWSP Museum of Natural History?
Here are a few tips for a successful group visit.
Try to visit the Museum before your trip. You might select and emphasize certain exhibits that tie into your curriculum. Some teachers design their own quiz sheets. However we do provide several different study sheets or scavenger hunts. Bring pencils and clipboards if possible.
Chaperones with minimal training can make excellent leaders. You might divide your class into small groups and have chaperones lead children around looking for answers to study sheets. Chaperones can ask kids key questions or point out items of special interest.
Where can kids eat bagged lunches? You might be able to reserve a room if you call in advance. Contact Conference and Reservations at 715-346-2427. It is doubtful that any rooms will be available if you do not make a reservation. Children may not eat lunch in the Museum since we have no lunch room.
You might wish to schedule a presentation given by our students. Talks usually last about 20 minutes in our auditorium; however, length may vary by request or according to experience level of the presenter. We train several new presenters each year. Nametags allow interpreters to call children by their name; do not place name tags on coats if coats are to be removed.. We do not give guided tours - our aisles are too narrow. Teachers and chaperones take charge of their group once the presentation ends. We encourage schools to contribute a minimum of $10 for each presentation. A single contribution would cover two presentations for a large group split in half.
Many kids enjoy purchasing educational souvenirs at our New Museum Store. We prefer that children visit the Store in groups of five and that they be permitted to purchase throughout the hour to reduce congestion. Some teachers schedule extra time for the Store. Chaperones can help limit the number of children in the Store and assist young children by opening envelopes of money. All profits go towards Museum programs.
Busses may park in lots Q or P. There is metered parking for cars in lot X. Call the Parking Office at 346-3900 if you have special parking needs.
Call 715-346-2858 if you have questions. We appreciate your visit.
